Twenty-First Sunday of Ordinary Time, August 27, 2023
O God, we offer our prayers to you seeking the grace to know in our hearts the answer to the question, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
- That through its welcoming of all people, the Church may inspire all to join with Simon Peter in knowing Jesus and proclaiming him as the Christ, the Son of the living God. We pray to the Lord.
- That political leaders who desire only to be masters of their palaces will be thrust from their offices, pulled down from their stations, and succeeded by those who are servants and seek the welfare of humanity. We pray to the Lord.
- That Pope Francis, the successor of Peter, will be a strong rock on which the Church may be built and whose teaching will provide the keys to the kingdom of heaven to all people. We pray to the Lord.
- That lawyers may persevere in the exercise of their profession “directed to the service of truth and justice needed for the advancement of peace in the world and harmony in our society.”[1] We pray to the Lord.
- That we may never forget that the younger generations have the right to receive a beautiful and livable world from us, and that this implies grave responsibility toward God’s generous creation.[2] We pray to the Lord.
- That the fires, floods, heat, and storms of summer will moderate and be overcome by love of neighbor rooted in love of all God’s creation. We pray to the Lord.
- That observance of the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances will renew the commitment of peoples of all nations to promote life and insist on humanitarian treatment of all individuals. We pray to the Lord.
- That the right of all children of school age to be educated will be honored, and that they will find secure environments in which they may learn, find truth, and flourish. We pray to the Lord.
- That those who are ill in mind, body, or spirit will receive compassionate care from their friends and communities that gives glory to God. We pray to the Lord.
- That we will give thanks to the Lord with all our hearts for those friends and family who have passed away as in the presence of the angels they sing God’s praise. We pray to the Lord.
God, our Father, through the gift of Church, may we receive the wisdom to understand what has been bound and loosed on Earth so that we may come to know the kingdom of heaven. We make our prayers through Christ our Lord. Amen.
