Weekly Prayers of the Faithful

Second Sunday of Lent, February 25, 2024

Second Sunday of Lent, February 25, 2024

We come to the Father asking that Jesus may be transfigured in our lives so that we might more clearly hear his word.

  1. That as Jesus was revealed as the Son of God in his Transfiguration, the Church may make Jesus known as he is to a world in desperate need of knowledge of God.  We pray to the Lord.
  2. That the evil that holds so many world leaders in its grip will be overcome this Lent by prayer seeking God’s mercy, fasting that expresses our hunger for Christ, and almsgiving that lifts up those who have been beaten down.  We pray to the Lord.
  3. That we will have the devotion of Abraham, not withholding from God all that we love in the world, but seeking Gods will confident that we will find blessings in obeying his commands.  We pray to the Lord.
  4. That we will know times of joy when we are carried to the high mountains of life as manifestations of God’s love that inspire us in our faith and sustain us when we return to the challenges we find in the lowlands and valleys.  We pray to the Lord.
  5. That we will enjoy clouds, not as dreary and depressing, but as manifestations of God tenderly casting a shadow over us as he calls us to know his Son. We pray to the Lord.
  6. That disregard for the sanctity of human life in Ukraine, Gaza, Papua New Guinea, and all places where the unborn, the elderly, children, and innocents are killed or deprived of dignity may be known as an abhorrent and loathsome evil, shunned by all individuals, communities, and nations.  We pray to the Lord.
  7. “In this Lenten season, [as the Christians of Gaza] share the Way of the Cross with Jesus, the first to share human suffering, we confide in Him who holds history in his hands, and we ask for the gift of peace.”[1]  We pray to the Lord.
  8. That when we encounter difficulties in life and are tempted to believe that fate is against us, we will find faith that knows God who is truly for us and Jesus who intercedes for us.  We pray to the Lord.
  9. That we will not take for granted the many blessings we enjoy in our country but will cry out with Peter in exclaiming with gratitude, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here!” as we act in ways that extend our good fortune to those who struggle in their pursuit of freedom and joy.  We pray to the Lord.
  10. That those who are sick and unable to obtain appropriate care or medicine may be consoled by their communities of friends and family and not despair of God’s unwavering love.  We pray to the Lord.
  11. That the families of the innocent children whose lives have been stolen by the devastation of war will be consoled by knowledge that their young are in the eternal peace and joy in heaven. We pray to the Lord.

O God, the Transfiguration of Jesus revealed his divinity to the apostles and allowed them to know him more fully.  May your answer to our prayers transform our lives so that we may grow in faith, come to know Jesus as your beloved Son, and be more faithful in listening to and responding to his words. We offer our prayers through Christ our Lord.   Amen.
