Weekly Prayers of the Faithful

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 11, 2024

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 11, 2024

Jesus teaches us that he is the Bread of Life.  We offer our petitions to the Father asking that we may share in that life more fully.

  1. That Pope Francis may not lose heart but be given health, wisdom, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as he raises his voice demanding peace, fraternity, and care of the environment.  We pray to the Lord.
  2. That political leaders will be at the service of their own people, the poor, and those who have lost their jobs, working for integral human development and for the common good.[1]  We pray to the Lord.
  3. That those suffering depression because of difficulties in their life who cry out with Elijah, “This is enough, O Lord!” may be strengthened for the journey ahead by their encounters with heavenly and earthly angels who provide encouragement and sustenance.  We pray to the Lord.
  4. That we may live in love as imitators of God — freed from all bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and malice — offering compassionate kindness to all we encounter.  We pray to the Lord.
  5. That despite our murmuring and complaints, we may be drawn to Jesus by the Father.  We pray to the Lord.
  6. That we will know Jesus as the gift of bread come down from heaven who gives us true life and strengthens us so that our lives may be gifts to the world.  We pray to the Lord.
  7. That victims of war, forced to endure the destruction of their homes, their communities, and their lives, may not lose heart but will be touched by the love of their neighbors, have the resolve to walk as did Elijah, and serve to enforce the fact that war must end.  We pray to the Lord.
  8. That children and teachers preparing to begin a new school year, will encounter safe environments in which they will find truth and knowledge.  We pray to the Lord.
  9. That those threatened by hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, heat, and torrential rain will find protection and supportive communities that give them hope, determination, and courage.  We pray to the Lord.
  10. That those who are ill will be cared for compassionately and receive both the bread of this world and that which has come down from heaven so that they are strengthened in body, mind, and spirit.  We pray to the Lord.
  11. That those nearing death on this Earth will know Jesus as the living bread from heaven and may live forever at the eternal banquet with all the angels and saints.  We pray to the Lord.

O God, may the gift of your Son in the Eucharist that we share strengthen our faith so that we know your love and receive your answers to our prayers with hope, humility, and gratitude.  We make these prayers through Christ our Lord.   Amen.
