Weekly Prayers of the Faithful

24th Sunday of Ordinary Time, September 15, 2024

24th Sunday of Ordinary Time, September 15, 2024

We offer our prayers to the Father asking for the grace to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Jesus.

  1. In thanksgiving for the safe journey of Pope Francis as he brought a message of hope, faith, and love to the people of Asia and Oceania during his apostolic journey.  We pray to the Lord.
  2. That world leaders will shun the escalation of hostilities in war-torn areas of the world and commit their words, actions, and resources to finding pathways to peace.  We pray to the Lord.
  3. That our Christian faith may be more than an observance of rituals and precepts and will be distinguished by love of Jesus Christ and following him as a disciple.[1]  We pray to the Lord.
  4. That our faith will be a “lived culture, inspiring minds and actions and becoming a beacon of light that illuminates the path forward.”[2]  We pray to the Lord.
  5. That those who work in Catholic education programs will not be deterred by difficulties but will “carry on [their] mission as witnesses of courage, beauty, and hope.”  We pray to the Lord. [3]
  6. That the minds of those who promote terror leading to senseless death of innocents in cities, schools, and along highways will be converted so that they will understand love of neighbor as the effective tool that accomplishes change.  We pray to the Lord.
  7. That when we feel alone, separated, or marginalized, we will know that we are united in the Holy Spirit and be willing to open ourselves to God, to our brothers and sisters, and to the Gospel as a compass for our lives.[4]  We pray to the Lord.
  8. That we will embrace the freedom God has granted to our nation by “respecting others and caring for our common home.”[5]  We pray to the Lord.
  9. That as we observe the International Day of Democracy today, we will commit ourselves to responsible actions and participation in the electoral process of our nation in the interests of preserving the gift of freedom that we enjoy.  We pray to the Lord.
  10. That we may act with compassion and mercy to all we meet so that the faith we share may be expressed by those actions.  We pray to the Lord.
  11. That those suffering from dementia and those who care for them will have the grace to embrace this cross and follow Jesus in peace with faith and hope.  We pray to the Lord.
  12. That those who have died will know Jesus as the Christ and rest with him for eternity in the peace of heaven.  We pray to the Lord.

O God, may your answer to our prayers make us effective witnesses of the Gospel who demonstrate our faith through actions that offer the necessities of life to those we encounter.  We make these prayers through Christ our Lord.   Amen.
