Passion Sunday, April 13, 2025

This Sunday we hear the story of the unjust Crucifixion of Jesus.  We On this Sunday we have heard the Passion story of the unjust Crucifixion of Jesus.  We come to the Father asking that we may be freed from injustices that infect our lives.

  1. That even though the U.S. Catholic Bishops have decided not to renew agreements related to children’s services and refugee support, they will act forcefully to find the best ways to serve those threatened by violence, persecution, and poverty.  We pray to the Lord.
  2. That government leaders may not be motivated by greed and lust for power, arguing among themselves as to who should be regarded as greatest, but instead will promote justice, peace, and service to people of all nations.  We pray to the Lord.
  3. That judges may find no guilt in those who are poor, persecuted, or fleeing violence — washing their hands to injustice as did Pilate — but will act with fairness, mercy, and integrity despite loud shouts and pressures to do otherwise.  We pray to the Lord.
  4. That we may never tire of prayer but will pray always knowing that the Lord is with us in every action of our lives.  We pray to the Lord.
  5. That we will courageously act with decency and honesty, not betraying our faith, principles, or friends, when we are tempted to succumb to pride, greed, envy, or selfishness.  We pray to the Lord.
  6. That those preparing for baptism at Easter will be strong in faith, guided by the Holy Spirit, and received with joy into welcoming parish communities.  We pray to the Lord.
  7. That those who raise swords and weapons against those they perceive as threats or enemies will hear and observe the command of Jesus, “Stop, no more of this!”  We pray to the Lord.
  8. That we may give up all burdens weighing down our hearts in order to experience the peace and joy that comes from the Lord’s unconditional love.[1]  We pray to the Lord.
  9. That those whose faith in Jesus is challenged may be strengthened by the intercession of St. Peter never to deny him but always to assert, “I do know him; I am a follower.”  We pray to the Lord.
  10. That those who are ill and discouraged their pace of recovery may have hope and join in prayer with Jesus, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still not my will but yours be done.” We pray to the Lord.
  11. That those approaching death may call out, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,” and hear the response, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”  We pray to the Lord.

God our Father, the joyful procession of your Son to Jerusalem was transformed quickly to the horror of his execution.  We offer our prays so that your grace may give us the strength to persist in manifesting joy and justice and to avoid despair and evil in our troubled world.  We make these prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord.    Amen.
