As we celebrate the gift of the Body and Blood of Christ in the sacrament of the Eucharist, we turn to the Father and ask that this food will give us faith and nourish our minds, our hearts, and our spirits.
- That in celebrating the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the Church may proclaim the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and the importance of proclaiming Jesus to a suffering world. We pray to the Lord.
- That the horrific killing of Jesus, whose body and blood were sacrificed for the life of the world, and his Resurrection will discourage those with power today from using brutality, torture, and execution as tools for suppressing dissent. We pray to the Lord.
- That political disagreements in our country will not lead to violence but will be seen as opportunities for respectful discussion that lead to the election of public officials who serve all who live in the United States. We pray to the Lord.
- That violence in the Middle East will end with the poor, women, children, and all those who are pawns in the conflicts between nations becoming able to live in peace and security with mutual respect, and fraternity. We pray to the Lord.
- That the Russian invasion of Ukraine will come to an end with missiles and drones that inflict pain on the innocent, destroying homes, and communities, replaced by negotiations that lead to understanding, the return of prisoners and children to their homes, and the rebuilding of towns, cities, and villages. We pray to the Lord.
- That observance of International Widows’ Day on Monday will bring attention to the plight of widows who experience grief or trauma due to the deaths of their husbands and face stigma, discrimination, destitution, and loss of social services and will also engender determination to provide them with support.[1] We pray to the Lord.
- That the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on Thursday will raise understanding that torture is “one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings” and stimulate education and prayer that demands the dignity of each human being be honored.[2] We pray to the Lord.
- That weather this summer will be mild so that farmers and ranchers may be blessed for their efforts to raise abundant good food that nourishes local consumers as well as those threatened by food insecurity in troubled or impoverished lands. We pray to the Lord.
- That those who are sick and nearing death will be nourished by viaticum, the body and blood of Jesus which is food for their journey to eternal life. We pray to the Lord.
- That those who have lost their lives in senseless violence this past week will rest in the eternal peace of heaven and will serve as evidence that violence is unable to solve problems or disputes. We pray to the Lord.
God our Father, as our world seems unable to avoid conflict and division, we turn to you and ask that you grant us peace knowing that the sacrament we celebrate today is a sign of your love and a call for unity. We make these prayers through your Son, Jesus Christ, truly present in the holy bread and sacred wine that we share. Amen.
[1] The United Nations estimates that there are more than 258 million widows around the world, many who are left unseen, unsupported, and unmeasured in society.
