THE DISTURBING ENORMITY OF 52%
A recent NBC News Poll, which was conducted from May 30 to June 10, shows that a slight majority of those polled, 52%, support the Trump Administration’s Immigration policy (the president no doubt wishes he could garner that kind of support for all of his efforts). I can’t say I blame them. After all, for months, if not years, the public has been incessantly told that those who sacrificed so much to walk across our border, are “the worst of the worst” – murderers, rapists, thieves, criminals, jail escapees, and insane people. They are responsible, they say, with no statistics to prove it, for increases in crime in all of our major cities. Migrants have been so loudly criticized, by people mistakenly presumed to always tell the truth, that when President Trump (who seldom tells the truth) and his categorically cruel assistant, Stephen Miller, and the vapid and incompetent Homeland Security Director, Khristi Noem, pledge to rid the country of these illegals poisoning the blood of our society, they believe them. The pretense suggests that our country and it’s cities will be safer. This disappearing of countless good and decent people will make no-one safer. In fact, it is likely to disrupt the very fabric of our society, built as it is on the backs of countless numbers of generous immigrants.
They must pay ICE agents a better than average wage (something like DOGE minions were paid), for it is hard to imagine, unless they are all sadists, that the drama and the trauma surrounding their deceptive trapping of men, women, and children, would be welcomed. Indeed, the migrants are convinced of their own righteousness (for they have followed all the rules as far as they know them) – what could possibly go wrong? But like an evil game of hide-and-seek, the ICE agents suddenly reveal themselves as the destroyers of their dreams, and all that they had worked so hard for disintegrates before their very eyes. Families are separated, children are removed, and they quickly disappear into an unfriendly detention center, where they are not allowed the human contact that makes life worth living. At the end of the day Stephen Miller goes home to his family, a lovely wife and three children, and even though he didn’t make the quota of disrupting the lives of three thousand migrants, he feels they can be rightly proud of him, for he did his very best.
It is nothing short of amazing, that 52% of the people of these United States, are happy with President Trumps Immigration policy. Like Stephen Miller and his wife, 52% of the American public can look in the mirror and feel nothing – no shame, no regret, no discomfort – they feel nothing, even though they have been fooled into believing that all migrants are criminals, demons, and murderers. What makes the 52% especially onerous, is that 62% of this country considers themselves Christian! How do people rationalize their Christian faith with the way immigrants are being treated in this country? Those who assume there is a direct corollary between what President Trump tells us about immigrants and crime on our streets are sadly confused. Statistics support that very little crime is done by anyone with immigrant status. Indeed, the opposite is true. The horribly pathetic rampage in Minnesota last week was perpetrated by a white, ordained Trump supporter, in spite of some Maga people suggesting otherwise. Who are we as a nation when the ‘disappearing’ of people, the deportations of people with no due process (even though less than 10% have any significant criminal record), and the destruction of families who face persecution at home and who long for a better life, doesn’t even bother us or seem at odds with our faith. A person’s faith in Jesus the Lord, who taught us to love all our brothers and sisters, is, or should be measured, by our lack of support for a cruel administration, whose only interest is in shameless quotas and not in the lives of people who only want what is best for their family.
